Chapter 12

“ARE WE STARTING WITH brains or brawn?” I asked Jimmy as we made our way to the car. “And are you driving, or am I?”

“You drive, and let’s start with the muscle. Hopefully he won’t know any better and will give us some ammunition to use in our visit with Henry Dunwoody.”

“Works for me,” I said, beeping my car open. “I can’t believe Chloe’s getting married this spring. That’ll mean she and Agent Brody won’t have known each other for a full year before tying the knot.”

“When you know, you know,” Jimmy said, sliding into his seat. “At least, that’s what they say.”

“What about you?” I asked. “Did you know?”

“I think so. But in the dumb way guys know. Not in the way girls know.”

“What do you mean?”

“My wife and I were friends first. It took me a long time to realize I actually liked her. Then as soon as she started dating someone else, I realized I was in love with her. Like I said, I was stupid.”

“So did you wait for your wife to break up with this guy or what?”

Jimmy glanced out the window as we cruised down the street. “I told her how I felt when she started dating him. Nothing happened, I just figured I wanted to let her know how I felt before she took any serious steps. I wanted her to have all the information.”

“How’d she react?”

“She slapped me.” Jimmy glanced at my shocked expression. “She told me I was dumb. She said she’d been waiting two years for me to ask her out, and she was annoyed it took me until she went on a date with someone else.”

“Sounds fair to me.”

“Hey, I agreed,” Jimmy said. “Especially knowing how it all ended.”

“Well? How did it end?”

“She dated the other guy for six months,” Jimmy said. “I didn’t say another word to her about my feelings during that time. The day they broke up, I proposed.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“I wasn’t going to let her get away again. She said yes. It was like we’d both known the whole time. It just took us a while to realize it.”

“That gives me an odd sense of hope,” I said. “Seeing as I can’t see myself falling in love at first sight. I just don’t think I’m someone who works like that. The thought of moving across the country for someone I’ve known for just a few months gives me hives. I won’t tell you how I feel about the thought of getting married.”

“You loved Russo.”

I gave Jimmy the side-eye. “You didn’t ask that like a question, so I’m going to assume you know the answer is yes.”

“I’m just stating the obvious,” Jimmy said. “I also told you my story to give you hope. I’m glad you figured that much out.”

“How is that hope?” I asked. “My story’s different than yours. Russo and I already tried and failed. You and your wife just took a little longer to figure out you liked each other. I know I like Russo.
